Plumber Chisinau: leaks, old pipes, taps and toilets

Plumber Chisinau, or santehnic, as people say here: for the mixer tap that drips, the toilet cistern that never stops filling, the pipe that leaves a wet patch on the wall and the main valve that no longer shuts. New fittings too: a toilet, a sink, a water heater. Every job has its price listed below, in MDL. On arrival the plumber shows you the cause first, names the amount, and only then opens the toolbox.

Calls are taken in Romanian or Russian.

Water running right now? What to shut off before the plumber arrives

The first few minutes decide how much water ends up on your floor and in the flat below. Go through these in order, then call.

  1. Close the flat’s main valve

It usually sits next to the water meters, in the bathroom or in a recess in the hallway. Turn it clockwise as far as it goes. Two of them, for cold and hot water? Close both.

  2. Still running? Call the building administrator

If the main valve no longer holds, or the leak is on the riser before it, the riser has to be shut off in the basement. The key is with the administrator: the ÎMGFL or the owners’ association.

  3. Cut the power in the wet room

If water has reached sockets, the water heater or the washing machine, switch off that room’s breaker at the fuse board. Mopping up comes after.

  4. Tell the neighbour below and take photos

The flood report is written by the administrator’s commission from what it sees on the spot. Photos taken straight away, in your flat and theirs, show what happened before anyone wiped the water up.

Then call and say where it is running, which floor you are on and what you have already closed. Leaks are taken at any hour, nights included.

What the price covers and what is extra

  • The smallest visit costs 300 MDL, even if it is one washer.
  • Travel within Chisinau’s sectors is included; for the suburbs, travel is agreed on the phone.
  • Parts and materials are paid separately, at the price on the shop receipt.
  • Night work costs more. You hear the exact figure on the phone, before anyone sets off.
  • If you turn the job down after the diagnosis, you pay 200 MDL for the call-out and diagnosis. If the job is done, nothing is added for them.

Where the water comes from: sign, cause, repair

Leaks in a flat repeat from one home to the next. Here is what you see, what the plumber usually finds and which line of the price list applies.

The tap drips even when it is off

The cartridge or the washer inside has worn out. If the model is still sold, only the cartridge is changed and the mixer stays on the wall; if not, a new mixer makes more sense.

Tap repair from 250 MDL, new mixer tap from 300 MDL

Water keeps trickling into the toilet bowl

It comes from the cistern: the fill valve no longer shuts off or the flush valve no longer seals. The mechanism is replaced, the toilet stays. A thin trickle left for a month shows up on the meter.

Cistern mechanism from 350 MDL

The ceiling of the flat below is wet

Most often it is the bath trap, the toilet pan connector or a pipe inside the wall. The plumber checks everything above the stain, one by one, and tells you where it was, so you have an answer for the commission.

Trap from 200 MDL, pan connector from 250 MDL

A puddle under the washing machine

The inlet hose has cracked by the nut, or the drain hose has slipped out of the trap. The hose is replaced or the drain refitted, and the machine goes back in its place.

Washing machine connection from 400 MDL

A joint on the old steel pipe is always damp

The thread has rusted. Tightening it buys a few days, then it drips again, so the section is cut out and replaced with polypropylene.

Polypropylene water point from 450 MDL

The water heater drips from its valve

The safety valve lets water out when the pressure rises. A few drops while it heats up are normal; a steady trickle calls for a pressure reducer or an expansion vessel.

Pressure reducer from 350 MDL

Cold pipes are wet in summer

That is condensation, not a leak: warm, humid bathroom air settles on the cold water pipe. Foam pipe insulation and airing the bathroom fix it, not a plumber.

Nothing to pay for here

The old pipes in Chisinau’s apartment blocks

Many flats in Chisinau are in blocks built between the 1960s and the 1980s. In plenty of them the water still runs through the steel pipes fitted when the block went up, and the sewage goes down cast-iron risers shared by the whole stairwell.

The first job in a flat like that is usually the main valve. Nobody has turned it in years, and when it is finally needed it will not close, or it leaks around the stem. We replace it with a ball valve that shuts with a quarter turn.

A water or sewer riser can be replaced for just the stretch inside your flat. The old pipe is cut near the floor slab, above and below, and joined to the neighbours’ pipe with adapter fittings. While the work goes on, the administrator keeps the riser shut in the basement, at an hour agreed in advance and announced to the stairwell.

If you are renovating the bathroom, replace the pipes in the wall before the tiles go on. A steel pipe left under tiles gives way exactly where you cannot reach it without breaking them.

Not sure what to replace first? Call and say what kind of block it is and which floor you live on.

Houses in Durlești, Stăuceni, Codru and Ialoveni

A house gets its water across the yard, through a buried pipe up to the door. Pipes running through a cellar, a garage or other unheated spaces are insulated or drained before the first frost: a frozen pipe splits lengthwise, and the leak only shows when it thaws.

How a visit goes and what you pay on top

Calling a plumber out to your home, from the first call to payment, looks like this.

  1. The call

You tell us what is leaking, where, on which floor, and what you have already closed. That tells the plumber which parts and tools to bring.

  2. Arrival time

We agree when the plumber will be there. Within the city’s sectors it is usually about an hour; out to the suburbs, or in morning and evening traffic, longer.

  3. Cause and price before any work

The plumber shows you where the problem is and names the amount. Work starts only once you agree.

  4. Repair and test

After the repair the water goes back on and the joint stays under pressure for a few minutes, with a dry tissue underneath. You see for yourself that it does not drip.

  5. Clean-up and payment

Offcuts and packaging are cleared away. You pay for the work, and for the parts by the shop receipt, only after the test.

What we do not do

So you do not spend a call on something that is not ours:

  • Gas pipes and gas boilers. Only gas-authorised companies fit those.
  • Septic tank emptying. That is a job for a suction truck.
  • Finding hidden leaks inside walls or screed with instruments. A separate specialist does that; such ads on 999.md start from 1 000 MDL.
  • Clearing drain blockages beyond the trap. That is a different job with different tools.

Radiators when the heating comes on

A man’s hand turning the thermostatic head on a radiator under a window

District heating in Chisinau starts in October, and the first days bring out everything that broke over the summer. A radiator that is cold at the top and warm at the bottom has air in it: it is bled through the small valve in the top corner, and if that valve is seized or missing, a new one goes in.

A radiator valve dripping onto the parquet is tightened or replaced. A new radiator means draining the heating riser, which the building administrator does. It is easiest before the season; in winter it can still be done, at an hour agreed with the administrator.

What people ask us on the phone

How much does a plumber cost in Chisinau, and what is extra?

The smallest visit costs 300 MDL, with travel inside the city included. Some common jobs: a mixer tap replaced from 300 MDL, a cistern mechanism from 350 MDL, a toilet fitted from 500 MDL. Parts are paid separately, at the price on the shop receipt. Night work costs more, and you hear the night price on the phone before anyone sets off.

What do I pay if the plumber comes and no work is done?

200 MDL for the call-out and diagnosis, and only if you turn the job down after hearing the cause and the price. If you agree and the job is done, nothing is added for the visit: you pay for the work from the list on this page and for the parts. You know the price before a single nut is undone, so the choice stays yours.

How fast can a plumber get here, and do you come at night?

Within the city’s sectors, usually in about an hour; out to the suburbs or in peak-hour traffic it takes longer, and we tell you on the phone when to expect the plumber. Urgent calls, meaning water running, no water at all or a burst pipe, are taken around the clock, weekends included. Planned jobs, like a new water heater, are booked in the daytime. Night work costs more, and you hear the price before anyone leaves.

Water is coming through the ceiling of the flat below: what do I do first?

Close the flat’s main valve, next to the meters. If the water keeps coming, call the building administrator, the ÎMGFL or the owners’ association, to shut the riser in the basement. Photograph the wet spots in your flat and theirs: the administrator’s commission writes the flood report from what it sees. The plumber finds the source, repairs it and tells you exactly where it was.

The main valve no longer shuts: can you replace it?

Yes. In older blocks it is one of the most frequent jobs, from 250 MDL. The main valve sits before every other tap in the flat, so the administrator has to shut the riser in the basement for a short while. We agree the hour together on the phone, so the administrator is there when the plumber arrives. The new one is a ball valve that closes with a quarter turn.

Can you replace the water riser just in my flat?

Yes. We replace the stretch of riser between the floor slabs inside your flat and join it to the neighbours’ pipe above and below with adapter fittings. A water riser starts from 1 200 MDL and a sewer riser from 1 500 MDL, plus pipes and fittings at the receipt price. The administrator keeps the riser shut for the job, at an hour announced to the stairwell.

Who buys the mixer tap, the toilet or the water heater?

You do, if you want a particular model: buy it and the plumber fits it. Small parts such as flexible hoses, washers, valves or a trap the plumber brings, and you pay the price on the shop receipt, with no markup. If you are not sure what to buy, ask on the phone which hose length or trap diameter you need, so you only go to the shop once.

Tell us what is leaking and where, and we will tell you the price

The job, the sector, the floor: that is enough to name the starting price on the phone. You hear the exact amount on site, before the work begins.
